Cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula - 2014 Trip Report

The dark makes the light all that much brighter and vibrant... Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo recently returned from another visit to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula to photograph some of the cenotes of the region. One of our favorite places for underwater imaging, the cenotes are limestone sink holes filled with fresh water, each different and visually stunning – walls of light beams from the sun's rays, stalactites, stalagmites make up breath-taking sights to capture for any underwater photographer. It's also a tour on the wayback machine, as ancient peoples inhabited many of the cave systems when they were above sea level. A vacation filled with diving in caverns, underwater photography and a natural history lesson unfolded before your eyes… way cool!Planning ahead is key for successful image making in the cenotes. Once again, we called upon the expert guidance of Dive Aventuras to ensure a safe and photographically productive experience diving the cenotes. Their local knowledge, planning and logistics was instrumental in our groups getting in the water at the right time to see and capture the walls of light, and safely guide us through the darkest portions of the caverns where a photographic opportunity lie just ahead. Every year, Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo travels to many locations around the globe, offering underwater photo and video workshops to improve your shooting techniques, Lightroom Total Immersion workshops which are boot camps focusing on learning post production tools, and photo expeditions to some of the most exotic locales on the planet. Our trip leaders are also photo pros, available to assist you with technical support on every trip. Check out our travel schedule and hope to see you under the waves!
