Cenotes & Whale Sharks, Mexico 2013 - Trip Report

Whale Sharks Trip Report From the cenotes, we transitioned to whale sharks on the island of Isla Mujeres for a snorkel only adventure. Each year, from June to August, hundreds of whale sharks aggregate in the waters near Isla Mujeres for a filter-feeding frenzy of bonito eggs. While whale sharks were the main attraction for underwater shooters, mantas were also present in large numbers. Each morning, our boats motored out of the marina by 07:00, on the quest to find the location of the aggregation. Some mornings it was a 45 minute ride, others, a longer haul of 1 ½ hours to locate the slow-moving, completely docile behemoths. Once in the water, you'd be surrounded by many whale sharks and mantas… endless photo and video opportunities! Snorkeling with the whale sharks in Isla Mujeres is a rare opportunity to witness their natural behaviors, and one that we hope to do again and again. Every year, Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo travels to many locations around the globe, offering underwater photo and video workshops to improve your shooting techniques, Lightroom Total Immersion workshops which are boot camps focusing on learning post production tools and photo expeditions to some of the most exotic locales on the planet. Our trip leaders are also photo pros, available to assist you with technical support on every trip. Check out our travel schedule and hope to see you under the waves!
