Making Art in West Palm Beach

When you talk to a Backscatter team member you can feel confident not only in their understanding of underwater imaging, but in their passion for it. The Backscatter staff spends the bulk of their free time in the water. Sometimes they're lucky enough to get a dive in on the clock too! Some of the Backscatter West team gets their macro on at the Blue Heron Bridge. Sean Boone shooting Sony RX100 III, Nauticam NA-RX100 housing, Keldan Luna 8 video lights and Light & Motion Sola 1200 video light. Rob Duncan shooting Panasonic GH4, Nauticam NA-GH4 housing and Keldan 4X video lights. Becca Boring shooting Canon 5D III, Nauticam housing, Inon Z240 strobes and Fisheye FIX Neo 2000 DX SWR dive light. Backscatter's Sean Boone, Rob Duncan, and Becca Boring recently headed to the warm waters off West Palm Beach, FL for some hands on training with Nauticam USA's Chris Parsons. For stable footage, a tripod is a MUST when shooting macro video. Sean Boone sets up his macro scene at the Blue Heron Bridge using the Xit 404 Tripod Plate and Xit 404 Tripod Legs. The mission of the trip was pretty simple: test gear, try new techniques, make art. Rob and Sean were on a mission to step out of their comfort zone of still photography and into the macro video world, while Becca, the newb on the trip, focused on stills. The team was lucky enough to get in three great dives on the Blue Heron Bridge over the weekend. The shallow waters and diverse range of small subjects made it the perfect place to dial in macro skills. Dive briefings are important, but to an underwater image maker, shooting tips for specific locations and conditions is invaluable. Nauticam USA's Chris Parsons shares his tips and tricks for the next dive site with the Backscatter crew. While they would have happily spent all weekend on the Bridge, the tides only allowed for afternoon/evening dives, leaving plenty of time to pack in some boat dives as well! Joining the fantastic Pura Vida Divers the team donned wide lenses and caught some goliath grouper action on the wrecks off West Palm Beach. The evenings were dedicated to reviewing the day's images. Chris offered invaluable insight on improving techniques and the Backscatter crew tinkered with images and gear until rather unreasonable hours! After just a few short days the Backscatter bunch headed home invigorated and ready to keep the momentum going back to the cold waters of Monterey!
