Introducing Isotta Underwater Camera Housings & Accessories

Backscatter is now the premiere global dealer for Isotta underwater camera housings!

The Isotta family has been making underwater imaging equipment since 1980. This Italian based company has some really cool gear and we are glad to have them in our lineup. They offer housings for everything from GoPro, compact point-and-shoot, mirrorless, and SLR cameras.

Red Anodized Machined Aluminum

These housings are made of machined aluminum and sit at an entry-level price just above most polycarbonate housings, but less expensive than other aluminum housings making them a great solution for many underwater shooters. Plus, the red anodized aluminum looks super cool!

Simplicity & Durability

Isotta designs their housings with simplicity and durability in mind. Our favorite thing about them is that you only need a set of metric allen keys to adjust any control on the housing. Everything is designed to be field-serviceable and easily repaired no matter where you are in the world. The controls are all clearly labeled with engraved designations, so they will never fade or wash off like a decal.

Double O-ring Seals

One cool aspect of these housings is that EVERYTHING has a double O-ring seal, down to the individual control shaft for each button and knob. This provides peace of mind and long-term durability. The control shafts are also made of the same anodized aluminum as the body, so there is no dissimilar metal contact. This eliminates the need for sacrificial zinc anodes and will prevent corrosion from building up, meaning less frequently required servicing of the housing.

Simple Opening Mechanism

Isotta housings use a rotating knob for the closure system to seal the housing. Simply pull up and rotate to open the housing. The back half uses a set of guide pins to align it, and this has a nice little benefit because it allows you to open the housing vertically, whereas most other brands require you to go port-side down and open up horizontally. If your housing is wet, this vertical method will help negate any drops of water falling in to the housing once it's open. The double O-ring seal is also awesome and provides a second line of defense in case the integrity of one O-ring becomes compromised. The rubber base of the contact pads on bottom provide a nice solid grip and some stability when opening the housing.

Optical or Electronic Strobe Connestions

You can use either fiber optic or electronic Nikonos-style strobe connectors. In most cases the Nikonos-style connection is an optional extra, but can be added on to almost all housings. They even have integrated LED flash triggers in the strobe connection assembly, which gives you the rapid fire of an electronic connection, with the connivence of fiber optics.

Accessory Bulkheads

You also get access to an M16 bulkhead opening, which can be fitted with an AirLock vacuum system, which for us is a critical component of every housing. We never dive without a vacuum and you shouldn't either, so this bulkhead accessory port is a very nice inclusion.

Many Port Options

Isotta housings use a simple port system, which is identical to Sea & Sea's method. The good news here is that Sea & Sea brand ports are fully compatible, so if you have any in your arsenal they will carry right over. You could also run a Nauticam port as long as it has a Sea & Sea style bayonet mount on it, so right out of the box you have tripled your port options. Isotta also makes a full suite of domes and flat ports, along with extension rings so that you can dial in just about any lens combo you would want for underwater imaging. There are two port sizes, one for DSLR and full frame mirrorless cameras, and another for micro 4/3 cameras.

Viewfinder Options

You can also install Inon brand viewfinders, such as the popular Inon 45 viewfinder, for increased magnification and better visibility. An expanded viewfinder is another accessory we consider critical, so having options here is a huge benefit and makes composing your image so much easier.

We're super excited to welcome Isotta to the Backscatter family, and we hope you are too. Stay tuned for more camera and housing specific videos!
